Photographing Children 101 Class/Snap Happy

[caption id="attachment_1139" align="aligncenter" width="700"]snap happy workshop photo courtesy of Kate Bartow[/caption]Last month I hosted my first Photographing Children 101 Class in Portola Valley. As a fundraiser for our local elementary school, Las Lomitas, I offered up seats for a Snap Happy workshop. The idea for the class was to teach parents ways to quickly improve their photography skills no matter what camera they use. Whether using an iPhone, point and shoot or DSLR camera, my goal was to teach basics of photographing children that they could apply anytime, anywhere with any camera.

Here are a few photos from the night. Each attendee got to apply the new techniques during a quick photo shoot. They also got their turn behind the camera when I photographed them for an updated profile photo.

San Francisco Bay Area Family Photographer/ Cherish This Day

Featuring favorite sessions is one of my favorite parts of my job as a San Francisco Bay Area family photographer! Through the Cherish This Day project, I am able to come together with a collective of other like-minded photographers each month. For July we are sharing a new favorite image.

I am fortunate to get the opportunity to document everyday moments of the families that commission me. It’s a joy to see the bond between siblings and parents. These two boys, ages 6 and 12, were super fun to photograph. I was delighted to see them express their brotherly love in a playful way. More from this family session next week…

Visit CHERISH THIS DAY to see my friends’ favorite images.

Woodside Newborn Photographer/Cameron

I adore being a Woodside newborn photographer! Getting the opportunity to document the joyous moments in a family’s life is a privilege.

This family has been in front of my camera several times over the past couple of years and it’s been super fun watching the children grow. Their latest addition to the family is Cameron. He is such a sweetheart. At a mere nine days old, he was alert and curious about his new world. Cameron is lucky to have two big brothers to show him the ropes. I predict he will never have a shortage of entertainment and adventures.

Menlo Park Children Photographer/ Cherish This Day

WOW! It’s hard to believe it’s June already! This month’s Cherish This Day theme is JUMP! Part of the fun of being a Menlo Park Children Photographer is that I get to play and act goofy with my clients.

I adore catching children doing things they love! These two girls are true gymnasts and graceful swimmers. It was fun capturing them acting silly and playing in the sprinklers.

Children’s Photography

Children’s photography is always fun and exciting! Sometimes it can be challenging, exhausting and surprising. I am always up for the challenge of getting to know my subjects before I photograph them. With children, or anyone for that matter, they need to feel comfortable before they will be authentic and natural in front of the camera. There are no two children who are alike. At Anna Dobrenski Photography our specialty is featuring your child as their most authentic self.

While I was at the Sweetlight Collective I was fortunate to photograph 25 different children over the course of two days. Some of these children work as professional models for the likes of Gap and Ralph Lauren while others were not quite as experienced in front of the camera. Still, they were just children. It was so amazing to get to connect with each of these boys and girls to photograph them. I will continue to share until they have all been featured.

I discovered I adore red heads as you’ll see, this beauty named Zoe was having fun with her flowing curls of red. LOVE!

Children Photographer/Tee Pee Fun/

As a children photographer, I’m always trying to think of cute ways to surround children in an environment that will encourage them to play naturally. I’m not big on props or sets in general. To me, less is more. I like simple. Authentic.

That being said, since I attended the Sweetlight Collective last month with children photographer, Skye Hardwick, my wheels have been turning on how to incorporate some of what I learned into my sessions. Often I think of my own children when looking for ideas for my sessions. Sometimes I tap into my childhood memories for inspiration.

Growing up in the South definitely meant lots of outdoor play. I remember my friends and I would play until “6:30 or dark” as my mom would say. We were free to play under the supervision (or not) of neighborhood watch. We took turns swinging on neighbors’ rope swings, tromping through creeks, chasing fireflies, splashing in the pool and running in the streets. Backyards were our playgrounds.

I really adore the idea of imaginary play spaces. For some reason I’ve always had an affinity for tee pees, not exactly sure why. These two girls playing and giggling in the tee pee reminded me of the carefree play from my childhood. The intimate secrets they exchanged and belly laughs were delightful to watch!

So, I guess you are wondering…does she have a tee pee for sessions? The answer is yes! It’s in the works. I am hoping to have my tee pee ready for summer sessions. How fun! If you are thinking of booking a children photographer, why not call one with a tee pee? I’d love to see your little ones enjoying their play in a fun space. Call me today at 415. 518. 8880 to book your session.

Family Photography/B Family/

Family photography is a joy with a group like this one! The B Family and I met at Windy Hill for their family photography session. It’s one of their favorite spots for running and hiking (mine too). The children, ages 7 and 9, were game for anything that day. There was no shortage of laughter and silliness! We hiked, laughed, stopped, giggled, over and over again. Oh, and we took a few photographs too.

It was a treat to get to photograph the family together with their dog Quincy under the huge oak tree! Imagine how special it was to see the looks on their faces when I delivered products to their home recently! Picture this: the tree image (below) blown up large, printed on glossy metal, hanging over their fireplace. Stunning! Big smiles all around.

If you are considering getting portraits taken of your family, you’ve landed in the right place. Selecting photographs to hang in your home can be daunting. One of our specialties at Anna Dobrenski Photography is turning family photography into artwork for your home. We have a wonderful iPad app that creates mock ups of clients’ walls with their images. Once potential wall art spaces have been identified, we photograph the walls. The walls are then mocked up with template overlays showing different options of configurations. Your family portraits are pulled into the templates so you can visualize the portraits to scale. Then you have to make some material choices: canvas, metal or thin wrap? Don’t worry, we guide you every step of the way. Our goal is to help you enjoy your family photography for years to come! This app has been a wonderful addition to the Anna Dobrenski Photography experience. Clients are so pleased to be able to see what their portraits look like on their walls before making a commitment.

San Francisco Bay Area Photographer/ Anna Dobrenski/ Happy May Day!

As a San Francisco Bay Area Photographer I am continually attending workshops and learning online. As previously posted, I attended the Sweetlight Collective workshop in Southern California.

Happy May Day! When I heard that Skye’s husband, Gary, made a maypole for the Sweetlight Collective I was delighted! May Day is one of those holidays with a quirky but fun tradition that not everyone knows about. The maypole is usually put up on April 30th then on May Day people from the villages would dance around it to celebrate the end of winter and beginning of spring/summer.

The girls at the ranch were beautifully dressed with perfect flowing hair donning gorgeous feather and floral headpieces. Add some yummy light, a camera and ta-da…MAGIC! You know I love to add in a little out of focus images occasionally and this seemed to be the perfect venue.

ATHERTON FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER/ THE K FAMILY

As an Atherton family photographer, I frequently get requests to photograph clients in their homes. Sometimes I suggest clients conduct their sessions at home. Children and parents are comfortable at home. Usually the pets are calmer in their abode. For most people, their is their haven.

This awesome family commissioned me to photograph them at home. The five of them were so entertaining during our session! We explored their home inside and out. The kids are a delight to photograph (the parents too, for that matter). I could spend days with this family and my camera!

MENLO PARK CHILDREN PHOTOGRAPHER I SWEETLIGHT COLLECTIVE

Where to begin? Almost two weeks ago I traveled to Southern California for a workshop with Skye Hardwick Edmonds of Work of Heart Photography. The workshop was held on a 20 acre private ranch in the hills of Pala. There were endless locations with personality on the property to choose from with gorgeous golden sunshine “sweetlight”. I was in heaven! Little did I know, once the children started arriving to be photographed I would really be in heaven!

Skye is a master at photographing children. She knows how to connect with children, how to style sessions with props and clothing as well as posing and creativity.

This was a hands on workshop where the other 11 photographers and I collaborated on ideas and execution. Just what the doctor ordered! I have so many images that bring a huge SMILE to my face so I’ll be sharing lots over the coming weeks.

I first wanted to share this project I worked on using a cute little cottage that inspired a conceptual session with two sisters that were travel writers. Our team selected wardrobe, props, set and storyline that prompted a shot list. We had help from hair and make up artists that helped pull the looks together. These two models, Maddux and Hayden are actual sisters. They are pros in front of the camera and a delight to work with. I love the way the session turned out!

THE D FAMILY! PALO ALTO FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

Being a Palo Alto family photographer means I have lots of options and choices of location. The peninsula has no shortage of beautiful spots to photograph my clients. My preference will always be someplace rugged and natural, although I do sometimes choose plush green parks. This client really liked having the option of tall redwoods and wild grassy fields for their family portraits.
